Le lotus bleu était sacré pour les anciens Égyptiens. Dans The Scented Garden, Eleanour Rohde écrit : « Le lotus symbolise la pureté de la vie spirituelle de l'homme, car comme les fleurs ont leurs racines dans l'eau, mais flottent au-dessus de la lumière du soleil, l'âme de l'homme s'élève au-dessus de la vie terrestre. ” Cette fleur et ses bienfaits ont été célébrés dans toute la culture, l'art et les cérémonies égyptiennes. Son utilisation était si banale et répandue ; certains historiens qualifient le Blue Lotus de « cannabis de l'Égypte ancienne ».
