Cette partie de la Russie est connue pour son climat et son terrain hostiles et comme un lieu d'exil traditionnel pour les prisonniers politiques. La raison pour laquelle la charoïte n'a pas été trouvée dans d'autres endroits n'est pas entièrement comprise. Mais cela est probablement dû à une combinaison d'un calcaire chimiquement unique réagissant avec une intrusion chimiquement unique et soumis à des conditions physiques uniques.
